FIXED | Always Allowed bug & Allow List impacting Safari

Hello,

I have a pro membership and use Opal on my iphone/ios, though I’m having two issues right now.

The first issue just started today. I have a scheduled session that starts in the morning which blocks all apps besides a few I have selected as “always allow”. Today, I noticed that Safari is completely unblocked. Previously, since the last major update, I could open Safari, but attempting to go to any website was blocked. Today nothing is blocked in Safari. I even tried starting a timer with Safari selected as blocked, but that didn’t work either. I have already checked these suggestions but it has not helped Why isn’t Blocking Working Correctly? - Opal Help Center

My second issue started with the last major update some months ago. There is now the always allow list in the app. I realized that even though I have a scheduled session on hard mode, I am still able to update the “always allowed” apps. This effectively makes the hard mode scheduled session useless if I can just add anything to be allowed during the session. I got around this by using the timer as the timer blocks access to the rest of Opal. Is there a way I can configure it so that I cannot update always allowed during scheduled sessions?

Thank you

Hey there @prosner ,

Happy to help, and sorry for the trouble! To clarify, you are encountering an Always Allowed bug in a recent version of the app. To resolve this Always Allowed bug, we’d recommend updating to version 4.10.1 of the app, which should be available soon here:

If you’ve updated and continue to run into any issues, please first confirm you are on version 4.9. You may do so by navigating to your Settings and scrolling to the bottom of the page. If you do not see version 4.10.1 listed, please wait a few days to allow the roll-out to become available to you.

After you’ve updated, please also test if the Safari issue continues. If so, please contact support in app by navigating to your Settings > Chat with Support. That way, we can collect your user logs and better understand the exact situation you’re experiencing.

Thanks for your patience,
Team Opal

Hi Sarah

Thank you for the response. In the time between when I wrote the post and the post was approved and posted, the “always allow” issue has been resolved.

I am now on version 4.11 (0814205107). The Safari bug was still present, but when I went to the settings to look for the version number, I found a setting that says “block websites in allow-only rules”. This seems to have fixed the Safari issue.

Thank you!

Excellent, thanks for the update @prosner . We’ve updated our Help Docs to ensure that customers are aware of that option in Settings, as we made this change because of Apple restrictions. Here’s more info: During an Allow Only Rule, iOS blocks websites everywhere - including web content that is hosted inside of apps. Due to this, apps you’ve allowed may show part of their content as restricted. On that note, if you’d like websites to be blocked in Allow Only rules, take these steps:

  • Tap on “Home”
  • Tap on “Profile” (accessible from the top right corner)
  • Tap on “Settings” (accessible from the top right corner)
  • Scroll down and toggle on/off “Block Websites in Allow-Only Rules”

Hopefully that will assist any other customer in this position!

I hope that helps,
Team Opal
